Derrick Spies was a quiet baby and barely spoke a word until the age of two,
preferring to simply point at something and expect whoever was paying
attention at the time to understand. Having said that, once Derrick started
stringing sentences together, he has never stopped. His passion is
communication, no matter what the form (spoken, written or even telepathic).
He has worked for both Die Burger and The Herald in Port Elizabeth, as well
as for the Daily Dispatch in East London in a variety of positions from
general reporter to covering crime and business. He even did a stint as news
editor and online news editor once.
Derrick subsequently left the newspaper industry to seek out a job that
actually pays and now runs his own media consultancy, where he spends most
of his time writing press releases for former colleagues to cut and paste as
their own.
Derrick’s love for the English language has spilled over into the occasional
poem and he currently has three novels that are in various stages of
compilation, with strong doubts that any will see the light of day.
He also has the sometimes annoying habit of referring to himself in the
third person and wrote this biography!
